SciDome users, please join us in Summer 2021 for Spitz Institute, our annual training and skills development event.

We’ll explore planetarium education, with a focus on fulldome digital presentation for science learning. Courses cover curriculum and realtime planetarium demonstration for teaching, including a comprehensive introduction to Starry Night software.

We’ll also explore production and automation skills needed to create state-of-the-art educational programs. We look forward to seeing you at the Institute.

What You'll Learn

Whether you attend the In-Person or Virtual session, you'll recieve comprehensive planetarium training
  • Starry Night and The Layered Earth: Detailed introduction to astronomy and earth-science simulation, covering basic software functions and settings. Perfect for new SciDome owners.
  • Comprehensive introduction to Automation: ATM-4 automation, including an introduction to The Layered Earth, basic show scripting.
  • What Your Colleagues are Doing: Lessons and demonstrations from various planetarium sites showing how they approach space and earth-science education in the dome.
  • Multimedia: Preparing and displaying slides and videos on the dome, custom and stock panoramas.
  • The Fulldome Curriculum: A detailed look at the Spitz astronomy curriculum – how to understand and present a diverse variety of topics.

I’ve attended science conferences for 30 years and Spitz Institute is the most rewarding of them all. Informative, challenging and the collegiality of Spitz created an environment of knowledge and inspiration.

Hands-on Learning

During Institute, attendees have many opportunities to learn by doing. Most courses are hands-on. Software for your laptop is provided, so you’ll participate as you learn.

Computers and Software

You’ll need to bring a laptop running Windows 10 (64-bit) to participate in most courses and workshops. Macs running Windows via Boot Camp work great; virtualization solutions like Parallels, VMWare, or VirtualBox will not work. You’ll need at least 6GB RAM and 40 GB free hard drive space to run the software we’ll install.

Please contact us for guidance if you’re not sure your computer is suitable.
