Marist High School

Chicago’s Marist High School built a major new science wing in space previously used for monastic housing. They specified this exterior dome to highlight the science wing’s centerpiece, a new multi-disciplinary planetarium. The planetarium system and projection dome were also provided by Spitz.

The science wing will feature areas for biology, chemistry, and environmental science learning, as well as a CSI-style forensics lab and an outdoor area for physics experiments.

Xanadu

Xanadu

Xanadu

The Xanadu elliptical vortex is the most complex structure Spitz has ever built. Comprised of 2926 unique pieces, weighing over 25 tons, and blending parts rolled to 69 different radii into an organic form, the vortex demanded creativity and painstaking attention to detail in all aspects of the project. The 384 feet of rolled, twisting, LED ribbon tracks were as complex as the structure itself.

The customer relied on Spitz’ artistic vision and engineering skills to create this dynamic sculpture. We augmented our standard design tools and practices to account for the project’s complexity. Eighty-one pages of shop drawings guided our installers, who completed the site work without error.

With smooth transitions and undulating topography, the intricate yet imposing structure will pull visitors into its grasp.

Tourneau Time Store

Kenneth Park needed a dome above the Tourneau store that would reflect the use of the space below. They wanted the space to have the same high tech look and clean finish shared by so many of the beautiful watches in Tourneau’s display cases.

Spitz enclosed heavy steel tube supports inside aluminum casings that were elegantly milled, welded and powder coated. The dome hides sprinkler pipes and cabling between the inner and outer surfaces. They’re hidden from view by translucent paneling at the outer edge.

All fasteners are hidden from view, giving the dome a clean, minimal appearance that perfectly matches the store’s aesthetic.
